How to Become ASE Certified

Becoming ASE Certified is a clear, three-step process that provides the gold standard credential for automotive service professionals.

The certification, issued by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), requires a combination of proven work experience and passing specialized exams.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to become ASE Certified:

Step 1: Gain the Required Work Experience

To receive your official ASE Certification, you must demonstrate real-world experience.

  • Minimum Requirement: Most certification tests require a minimum of two years (full-time) of hands-on work experience in the automotive industry.

  • Substitutions: ASE allows accredited formal training (from vocational schools, community colleges, or OEM programs) to substitute for part of the work experience requirement. For example:

    • Completing an ASE-Accredited program may credit you for up to one year of the two-year requirement.

    • If you pass three or more ASE Entry-Level Certification tests, you can receive credit for six months of the work experience requirement.

  • Documentation: You must submit an ASE Work Experience Form detailing your employment and/or education to qualify for the final certification.

Step 2: Choose Your Test Series and Register

ASE offers over 50 different certification tests across 14 series, allowing you to specialize in your area of expertise.

  • Choose Your Series: The most common starting point for technicians is the Automobile and Light Truck Certification Tests (A-Series):

    • A1: Engine Repair

    • A4: Suspension and Steering

    • A5: Brakes

    • A6: Electrical/Electronic Systems (Highly Recommended due to modern vehicle complexity)

    • Other series include: Diesel Engine (T-Series), Collision Repair (B-Series), Service Consultant (C1), and Advanced Level (L1, L2, L3, L4).

  • Registration and Fees:

    • Create a profile on the official myASE website.

    • Pay a non-refundable registration fee (usually around $34) for each registration window.

    • Pay the fee per exam you wish to take (e.g., around $59 for a standard A-series test).

  • Schedule the Exam: Once registered, you must schedule your appointment within a 90-day window at an authorized, secure, computer-based testing center.

Step 3: Study, Pass the Exam, and Become Certified

The exams are challenging, multiple-choice tests designed by industry professionals to assess real-world diagnostic and repair knowledge.

  • Preparation: Download the free ASE Study Guides from the official ASE website for your specific test. Focus on the Task Lists to identify your weak areas and use practice tests to gauge your readiness.

  • Pass the Test: You must achieve a passing score on the written test. You will receive your results immediately after completion at the testing center.

  • Receive Certification: Once you have both a passing test score and the required work experience documented and approved, you will officially be awarded the ASE Certification for that specific area.

Achieving Master Technician Status

To become an ASE-Certified Master Automobile Technician, you must pass all eight core exams in the Automobile and Light Truck Series (A1–A8) and meet the two-year work experience requirement.
